Census Data: 1 in 4 African Americans Living in Poverty
Feeling the pinch in your finances? Has the recession come knocking on your door leaving you crying out to God for help and wondering when relief will show up? Well, you're not the only one.
The Census Bureau announced that Americans are seeing the highest poverty rate in 15 years! Yikes! According to census data, the official poverty rate for 2009 was 14.3%, up from 13.2% in 2008, and the highest it's been measured since 1994. In fact, the number of Americans living in poverty (43.6 million) is the largest ever during the 51 years that such stats have been published.
News One focused on the minoirty community, and it doesn't seem to get much better from there. 1 in 4 African Americans and 1 in 4 Hispanic Americans are now living below the federal poverty line.
In a statement, Obama said that "even before the recession hit, middle class incomes had been stagnant and the number of people living in poverty in America was unacceptably high, and today's numbers make it clear that our work is just beginning..."
